Are Artificial Nails Worth The Possible Damage?
They look amazing, but artificial nails can be damaging to natural nails. They provide pizazz to natural nails, especially when the natural nails are weak, thin, peeling, splitting. Acrylic nails are the nails most likely to damage natural nails. Gel nails are a better option, but they also come with possible problems.
Acrylic nails
The acrylic nail gives a lovely, healthy look to fingertips. The nail technician files down the natural nails and then, using chemical solutions carefully applies the acrylic nails. The nails need to be filled in every two to three weeks for as long as artificial acrylic nails are desired. When it is time for a change, the process to remove the nails means soaking the fingers in an acetone solution.
Gel nails
Gel nails are another nail option and may be kinder to natural nails. With gel nails, the nail technician lengthens each nail by applying gel nail polish. It requires a few coats of gel polish and UV light heats each coat. Gel nails have a more flexible feel than acrylics. Gel nails are also more expensive.
Damage details
So what’s the damage potential of acrylic and/or gel nails? With acrylic nails, it is the filing down of the nails that weaken already weak nails. The chemical solution used on nails can cause irritation on and around the nail. As pretty as they are, acrylic nails often mean damaged natural nails. With gel nails, the damage is less than acrylic nails. The UV light for heating and drying gel nails contain the worry about skin cancer. Gel nails are not as strong as acrylic nails and might need replacing more often.
Ask the nail technician
Ask the nail technician for some simple changes that might help reduce nail damage. Ask for gel nails that soak off instead of gel nails that require filing. Also, ask if the nail technician offers LED lighting to dry/heat the gel nails rather than UV lighting. Always make sure that the nail technician sterilizes instruments before using them, and also request that cuticles not be pushed back or cut as that can be irritating and sometimes cause infection.
Take care of nails
Moisturize hands throughout the day. Pay attention to nails and cuticles and keep them hydrated with petroleum jelly. Nighttime before bed is a good time to give nails a moisture boost. Take it all off and give nails an artificial nail holiday occasionally as well.
